While I am enjoying my retirement, I would like a little more intellectual
stimulation. If anyone knows of a worthy organization needing software
developed on a volunteer basis, have the organization contact me at
mailto:***@golden.net

Especially if the organization is in the Golden Triangle region of southern
Ontario.

Cheers,
Bob

Why not contributing to SourceForge.net? The best thing about it is
that you can choose the project you like the most.

If you can find one you like... hmmm... I'll dig around. I am still open to
suggestions, though.

Nobody has done anything with the "Tutorial D" project as of today.
Ever write a compiler?

Actually, that's not quite accurate. There is a project that has done
some preliminary work:

http://duro.sourceforge.net/

It has implemented a C API that implements the "stuff underneath the
skin," using Berkeley DB as the storage system. (Which is a good
idea; it is transactional and all...)

It doesn't provide a compiler of "Language D;" it's more like embedded
SQL without the SQL. Everything gets done via function calls, with
the same gratuitous quantities of data structure definitions that you
get if you code CORBA applications in C, or if you code linear algebra
apps in C. You have to define and allocate all of the "work area"
yourself.

A meaningful task would be to attach an interpreter to Duro so that
its use wouldn't require generating the "gratuitous chunks of C."

They are available for worthy organizations regardless of size.

I got a note from someone in Torquay looking for help building an
"attendance tracking" system for a religious school. They may be more
Catholic than would fit my interests; if that fits better with your
interests, I could pass on a contact.

Their interests in "pure doctrine" is probably more at the religious
level than at the database level, mind you...

IMHO the implementation of the Value-instance-connectivity method
could be an interesting challenge.

If I understood it, I might agree. As things stand now, I will leave
it for someone else to tackle. Hmmm... maybe I should dig out the
patent and finish reading it.

Just my one (Euro-)cent:
The open sorce project Firebird works on a relational DBMS which derived
from Interbase 6.0. The project team is currently working on version 2.0.

I found Firebird to be a very stable and fast RDBMS and used it to
implement a production control system with heavy data traffic (about 300
GB - 400 GB of operational data throughput per year).

The only important feature it lacks for the moment from my point of view
is a REDO LOG facility. Could the realization of this feature be a good
intellectual stimulation for you? If you are interested in this theme,
you can have a closer look on the project's home page
firebird.sourceforge.net

Best wishes from Germany :-)
